Investing in a good blender
I believe that investing in a high-powered blender is important to making delicious smoothies (I currently have a Vitamix!). Don’t worry though, you can still use an inexpensive blender and get great results; however, a high-powered blender will help to break down the fruits and veggies to get that perfect creamy smoothie consistency. Here are a few different options with a variety of price points:
- Vitamix: I have this series and love it. It’s very powerful and makes the creamiest smoothies.
- Ninja: I know many people who use a Ninja blender and love it. It comes with single serve cups for easy, on-the-go breakfasts!
- Nutribullet: for a super affordable blender that’s perfect for one, the Nutribullet is a great option.
Tips for making smoothies
Here are a few of my favorite tips I like to share in regards to making the best creamy, healthy smoothies:
- Use frozen fruit. Using frozen fruit is best as it helps keeps the smoothie cold and thick. Sometimes ice doesn’t blend as well, so it’s best to skip unless absolutely necessary. Instead of ice, try using 1/2 cup frozen cauliflower.
- Add more liquid. Don’t be afraid to add more liquid if your smoothie is too thick or won’t fully blend. High powered blenders tend to blend frozen fruit much better, so if you have a regular or personal size blender, you may need to add more milk.
- Blend low, then blend high. Start the blender on low speed, then gradually increase to high to help blend all ingredients. Finally, end with the blender on low speed.
- Sweeten to your liking. If a smoothie doesn’t taste sweet enough for your liking, you can add a 1/2 tablespoon of honey, pure maple syrup or 1 pitted Medjool date.
- Choose your milk flavor. Feel free to use any milk you’d like in smoothie recipes according to your preferences. Almond milk tends to have a neutral taste in smoothies, coconut milk will add a more tropical and creamy flavor, and regular milk will add a boost of protein.
Adding extra nutrition to your smoothies
You can enhance any smoothie by adding additional nutritious ingredients to really make it your own. Don’t be afraid to experiment a little! Here are a few suggestions that you can add to any smoothie:
- Oats: to add a little heartiness to your smoothie and to help thicken it, feel free to add in 1/3 cup oats. Do not use steel cut oats as they will not blend well.
- Matcha: if you’re a green tea lover, you can add a teaspoon of matcha to your smoothie for green color, antioxidants and earthy flavor.
- Flaxseed meal: this is one of my favorite ingredients to add to smoothies for a little boost of fiber and minerals, and is especially great for nursing mamas as flaxseed can help increase milk supply. Usually a tablespoon is plenty! Here’s a brand I love.
- Chia seeds: feel free to add in a tablespoon of chia seeds to your smoothie for a boost of healthy fats and fiber.
- Hemp seeds: if you’ve been wondering what to do with those hemp seeds lurking in your cupboard, feel free to throw in a tablespoon into your smoothie for a boost of healthy fats, omegas and minerals.
- Unsweetened cacao powder: personally, I prefer to use cacao powder over regular cocoa powder, as it contains more minerals such as magnesium and has a richer chocolate flavor. I recommend starting with a 1/2 tablespoon and increasing to 1 full tablespoon if you’d like.
- Spinach: if you’re looking to get more greens in your smoothie, try adding a cup or two of raw or cooked spinach. You’ll never be able to taste it, but just know that it may change the color of your smoothie to brown depending on what other fruit you use.
- Protein: Easily add more protein to a smoothie by adding 1/2 cup greek yogurt or 1 scoop of your favorite protein powder. I recommend Vital Protein collagen peptides or Four Sigmatic Protein Powder.
- Nut or seed butter: another great way to add protein, healthy fats and creaminess to your smoothie is by adding in a tablespoon of your favorite nut or seed butter. I love Wild Friends nut butters (use the code ambitious15 for 15% off your order) and Soom Tahini (use the code ‘ambitiouskitchen’ for 10% off your order). Powdered peanut butter is also great for getting rich peanut butter flavor.
- Avocado: add healthy fats and create a thick, creamy smoothie by adding ripe avocado. Usually 1/4 or 1/2 of an avocado will be sufficient and also help to keep you satisfied thanks to those healthy fats.
- Frozen cauliflower: feel free to throw in a cup of frozen cauliflower to thicken your smoothie and get extra veggies in. You won’t even be able to taste it!
Make your smoothies taste amazing
There are a few keys for making delicious smoothies every time:
- Use natural sweeteners: super ripe bananas with tons of brown spots are my favorite, but you can also use soaked Medjool dates to sweeten your smoothie! Other in season berries & fruits like mango and pineapple will provide the perfect sweetness. We recommend using 1 banana or 3 soaked Medjool dates to sweeten your smoothie.
- Experiment with simple swaps: many fruits are easy to swap! Feel free to use different berries than a recipe calls for, such as mango or peaches in place of pineapple (and vice versa).
- Don’t be afraid to add veggies: a boost of greens from 1-2 cups of spinach/kale, or even ½ cup of frozen cauliflower or shredded frozen zucchini should not alter the taste of your smoothie. Promise!
- Try some cozy spices & flavor boosters: you’ll notice that some of my smoothie recipes include warming spices like cinnamon and nutmeg, richness from cacao powder, extracts like vanilla and almond extract and flavor from tahini, peanut or almond butter. These add flavor without additional sugar, so try a sprinkle of cinnamon or a tablespoon of cocoa powder or your favorite nut butter next time!
- Opt for a flavorful smoothie base: instead of using regular non dairy milk, try a vanilla almond milk, oat milk or even coconut milk from the can, which is naturally sweet. A flavored yogurt or splash of fresh squeezed orange juice would be delicious, and brewed, cooled coffee or cold brew adds a wonderful, deep flavor. Just be sure to match the fruits with any juice, and use coffee in smoothies with only banana or dates as the fruit.
3 methods for preparing smoothies ahead of time
Method 1: the ice cube tray method
This is my personal favorite way to make smoothies ahead of time because you can either choose to enjoy the smoothie right away by blending up the smoothie ice cubes, or you can allow the cubes to thaw to room temperature then simply give the smoothie a shake.
- Add it to an ice cube tray. Once you’ve made your smoothie, pour it into an ice cube tray so that each “cube” space is evenly filled. I like these silicone trays for easy removal.
- Freeze. Place your ice cube tray in the freezer for a few hours, overnight, or for up to 3 months.
- Thaw & shake. Once you’re ready to drink your smoothie, place the smoothie cubes in a large glass with a lid (I recommend a mason jar) and transfer it to the refrigerator for about 1 hour. Then, give the glass a shake and your smoothie will be ready to drink!
- Blend if you’d like. You can also transfer the smoothie cubes back to your blender, add extra milk and blend, then enjoy your smoothie right away.
Method 2: the mason jar method
- Add it to a jar. After you’ve made your smoothie, pour it into a mason jar and close it with a lid.
- Freeze. Place your mason jar in the fridge for 2-3 hours, or in the freezer for up to 3 months.
- Shake & enjoy. When you’re ready to drink it, simply give it a shake if it has been in the refrigerator, or let it thaw for a few hours in the fridge or at room temperature if it has been in the freezer.
Method 3: the freezer pack smoothie
There are a couple of options with this method. You can either place all of your smoothie ingredients into reusable airtight bags, or make your smoothies and do the same.
- Add it to a bag. Pour your smoothie into a reusable, airtight bag (like these!) OR add all of your smoothie ingredients, besides the liquid into one bag.
- Freeze. Place the reusable bag into the freezer for up to 3 months.
- Thaw & blend. When you’re ready to drink it, add your frozen smoothie back to your blender with additional milk, blend, and enjoy. You may need to thaw it out a bit first.
- Optional: use whole ingredients. If you’ve frozen the ingredients by themselves, add them to your blender + the liquid called for in the recipe, then blend, and enjoy!
How long can you keep a smoothie in the fridge or freezer?
- In the fridge: store your smoothies or smoothie ingredients in the fridge for 1-2 days before using them.
- In the freeze: you can store smoothies or smoothie ingredients in the freezer for up to 3 months. They’re perfect for prepping ahead of time and enjoying week after week.

If you make smoothies ahead in mason jars can you add protein powder or collagen ahead of time? Or does freezing ruin the protein?
Yes feel free to add them ahead of time!
Thanks for the GREAT tips!!
Absolutely!!
love these tips. Great for smoothie lovers who have never put veggies in! I always do frozen zucchini! I peal and steam it lightly for better digestion, then freeze. I also never add ice to my smoothies, totally ruins them (in my opinion!), so using things like veggies with minimal flavor helps fill in those gaps when you want a thicker smoothie without adding even more fruit!
Absolutely! Great idea with the zucchini, and yes, I love adding frozen cauliflower instead of ice 🙂
I’ve been wanting to do make-ahead smoothies for a long time but kept forgetting to look up how to do it. This is great! Thanks!
Perfect timing! Let me know if you try any of these methods 🙂
I tried the mason jar method and it was a major fail! The smoothie was great when I made it, but I just put a jar in the fridge to defrost last night and this morning it was suuuuppper bland and lacking flavor. Was it because I used Greek yogurt?
Which smoothie did you make? I haven’t had an issue with putting it into the freezer and then defrosting. Did you use ice at all in the smoothie? If so that could be the culprit. Also, make sure you are shaking it well!
Thanks for publishing these #AKSmoothieWeek articles, Monique. The smoothies look awesome! And, what I love the most is that you’re using metal straws!!! Keep up the fantastic work, Monique! <3 <3 <3
Absolutely! Love the metal straws. Enjoy!
Hi! It is okay to store smoothies in mason jars overnight as well? Thanks!
That should be fine!

Love this post!
Can I freeze it with chia seeds/nut butters/honey as well?
Thanks!
Hi, Michal! Definitely!
I am new to the world of smoothies, I just randomly make them a couple times a year and always wonder why I don’t stick with it. Mainly, I like my coffee in the morning and was super excited to see a coffee smoothie!
I did see this above, and was wondering if it is mostly because of flavoring? Or is there some other reason I wouldn’t get?!
“… use coffee in smoothies with only banana or dates as the fruit.”
Thanks for your inspiration!
I’m so glad you’re trying more smoothies, Megan! That note is about pairing coffee with other fruits in smoothies; I don’t think it pairs well with other fruits (besides bananas and dates). Let me know what you think of the coffee smoothie!
Hello
I have only recently discovered Ambitious Kitchen and I am totally captivated by the wonderful recipes that I’ve come across so far. I love the way that you cater extensively for vegetarians and although I have not yet tried any, I am excited to start cooking. Thank you very much. I’m looking forward to following you regularly.
Aw thank you SO much, Andreina! I’m so happy you’re here 🙂 Not sure if you’ve found our vegetarian & vegan recipe categories, but they might be helpful to you as you’re searching for what to make. Thank you!!
I appreciate your tips. I was not aware of the benefits of adding veggies to smoothies! My favorite is frozen zucchini! To improve digestion, I steam it gently, then freeze it after peeling. When you want to make a thicker smoothie without adding more fruit, use veggies with little flavor to fill in the gaps (in my opinion!)!
Nice! So happy you love it, too 🙂
Will try the smoothie prep
Hope you enjoy it!
I am so thankful I found this sight. Thank you! I am new to blending green smoothies and in all my research, this has been the most helpful. 💚
Aw thank you so much, Dana — I’m happy you’re here! Glad to hear the tips are helpful 🙂
Great advice on how to store smoothies!
I made the Almond Cherries Smoothie. It was awesome. The almond extract makes it so good. I think this is my best smoothie so far.
Thank you so much for sharing this to me.
