Ingredients in the best berry smoothie
This berry smoothie boasts a wide array of nutritious ingredients packed with antioxidants, vitamins, fiber and protein. You can feel free to mix and match ingredients this berry smoothie, but in general, I suggest trying to stick to the fruit and liquid ratios to ensure the smoothie stays nice and creamy.
- Berries: I like to buy a bag of frozen blackberries, raspberries & strawberries, or freeze them when they’re ripe in the summer. This trio of berries adds a boost of antioxidants, vitamin c, and fiber to the smoothie and gives it a pretty purple color. If you don’t have individually frozen berries feel free to use a bag of frozen mixed berries! Using frozen fruit helps to thicken the smoothie, so if you opt for fresh fruit you’ll likely have to add ice or frozen cauliflower.
- Banana: using frozen fruit is best in smoothies and frozen banana helps to sweeten this one!
- Spinach: get some extra greens in by adding spinach to this berry smoothie – you won’t be able to taste it, I promise! You could also use kale if you’d like.
- Almond butter: all natural almond butter (or any other nut butter) will add a creaminess, boost of protein, and healthy fats to your smoothie. I love the RXBAR almond butter.
- Flaxseed meal: this is one of my favorite ingredients to add to smoothies for a little boost of fiber and minerals, and is especially great for nursing mamas as flaxseed can help increase milk supply. Here’s a brand I love.
- Plain greek yogurt: add a boost of protein and a little tang with some greek yogurt. I love using siggi’s because it’s low in sugar and high in protein.
- Milk: feel free to use any milk you’d like in my smoothie recipes according to your preferences. Almond milk and oat milk tend to have a neutral taste in smoothies, coconut milk will add a more tropical and creamy flavor, and regular milk will add a boost of protein.
Can I skip the banana?
I love the extra thickness and sweetness that the frozen banana adds to this berry smoothie, but you skip the banana and simply use vanilla greek yogurt instead to help sweeten the smoothie a bit.
Adding extra nutrition to this berry smoothie
You can enhance this berry smoothie even more by adding additional nutritious ingredients to really make it your own. Here are a few suggestions that you can add if you’d like:
- Chia seeds: feel free to add in a tablespoon of chia seeds to your smoothie for a boost of healthy fats and fiber.
- Hemp seeds: if you’ve been wondering what to do with those hemp seeds lurking in your cupboard, feel free to throw in a tablespoon into your smoothie for a boost of healthy fats, omegas and minerals.
- Oats: to add a little heartiness to your smoothie and to help thicken it, feel free to add 1/3 cup of oats. Do not use steel cut oats as they will not blend well.
- Frozen cauliflower: feel free to throw in a cup of frozen cauliflower to thicken your smoothie and get extra veggies in, especially if you opt for fresh berries instead of frozen. You won’t even be able to taste it!
- Protein powder: add extra protein to this smoothie with collagen peptides or a scoop of your favorite protein powder! I like Aloha and Four Sigmatic.
Tips for making smoothies
Here are a few of my favorite tips I like to share in regard to making the best creamy, healthy smoothies:
- Use frozen fruit. Using frozen berries and a frozen banana in this recipe is best as it helps keep the smoothie cold and thick. Ice can water down the smoothie flavor and often doesn’t blend as well, so it’s best to skip it unless absolutely necessary.
- Add more liquid. Don’t be afraid to add more liquid if your smoothie is too thick or won’t fully blend — especially if you’re adding more mix-ins. High powered blenders tend to blend frozen fruit much better, so if you have a regular or personal size blender, you may need to add more milk to get a creamy texture.
- Start on low speed. Start the blender on low speed, then gradually increase to high to help blend all ingredients. Finally, end with the blender on low speed.

I’ve enjoyed smoothie week! Perfect for summertime; all great recipes. Selfishly hoping another muffin week makes an appearance! 🙂
So happy to hear that! And absolutely – stay tuned for another muffin week 🙂
Should your recipe for print say 1/2 CUP frozen blackberries?
Yes – thank you for the catch!
This was amazing!!! I used blueberries in place of all berries bc that’s what I had on hand! SO GOOD
Perfect!! Glad you loved it 🙂
Can fresh cauliflower instead of frozen be used?
That should work, you may just have to add ice to get that cold, smoothie texture!
Seriously delicious and refreshing especially as temps have soared above 100 degrees in my state 😓 I split the smoothie into two because they were so large! I left out the nut butter because I have a bad habit of eating entire jars of nut butters in a matter of a couple weeks when I buy them. 🙃 so I need to cut back 😂 I can imagine though how yummy it would be with the nut butter. And still delicious without.
Perfect for the hot weather! Glad you loved this one even without the nut butter 🙂
I LOVE this smoothie recipe. It’s perfect! Thick and filling and packed with nutrients. There is nothing I change about it. Thanks, Monique!
So happy to hear that!
Refreshing, healthy all around smoothie ; I only omit the nut butter for my boyfriend… haha. I added hemp seeds and used soy milk.
Happy that you’re loving it, Jennifer 🙂
As with all AK smoothies, I loved this! I made a few swaps based on what I had:
-Replaced blackberries with strawberries
-Replaced greek yogurt with frozen riced cauliflower
-Used 1 c almond milk because my blender is weak
-Used slightly less than 1 whole banana and I still through it was perfectly sweet because of all the berries
This was a perfect delicious/nutritious smoothie that kept me full until lunch
Thanks so much for sharing these swaps! I’m so happy you loved it 🙂
This is my go-to smoothie! I make it exactly as written — although I do add in the extra almond milk since I prefer a little thinner smoothie.
