I normally don’t declare recipes the best for just any reason. In fact, if I’m saying something is the BEST, then it’s for a very good reason. Most often because I had multiple people try out a recipe and tell me it’s the best thing they’ve ever tasted; this happens most frequently when I bake cookies.
I created this now-internet-famous healthy turkey chili back in 2015 not knowing that Ambitious Kitchen would soon be known for it. I remember the very first time I made it and I was surprised at the wonderful thick texture and truly addicting flavor. Fast-forward almost 10 years and it’s one of the all-time MOST POPULAR recipes on Ambitious Kitchen. And for good reason!
It has quickly become one of those recipes people tuck into their recipe boxes, share with friends and family, and bookmark on their phones. I’m obsessed and I’m pretty sure the chili lovers of the world are, too.

Ingredients in the best healthy turkey chili
This turkey chili recipe is packed with tons of spices, veggies, beans, and lean ground turkey to give it the perfect thickness and flavor. Here’s what you’ll need to make it:
- Veggies: you’ll need a red bell pepper, yellow onion, and canned or frozen sweet corn.
- Ground turkey: we’re adding lean protein with ground turkey (or you can use ground chicken) instead of traditional ground beef.
- Herbs & spices: the chili gets its incredible flavor from mild chili powder, cumin, dried oregano, cayenne pepper, and plenty of salt.
- For the broth: everything simmers in a can of diced or crushed tomatoes and chicken broth.
- Beans: I like to add two cans of red kidney beans for wonderful texture, fiber & protein.

Our fav ways to customize this turkey chili
The fun part about cooking chili is all of the toppings and ways you can make it your own! Here are some suggestions:
- Add delicious toppings: I love topping my bowl with fresh avocado, a sprinkle of shredded cheese, sour cream or Greek yogurt, fresh cilantro, tortilla chips, and sliced jalapeños.
- Get spicy: if you like a kick of heat, feel free to add extra cayenne pepper and/or top your bowl with sliced jalapeños.
- Make it mild: alternatively, if you’re sensitive to heat simply omit the cayenne pepper. Please note that I use McCormick chili powder in this recipe, which is very mild. If your chili powder is spicy, you’ll want to reduce the amount.
What to serve with this turkey chili

Make it in your slow cooker
This healthy turkey chili can easily be made in the slow cooker as well! A great hands-free way to cook it and keep it warm. A few tips:
- Reduce the chicken broth to 1/2 cup.
- Brown the turkey and onions before adding them to the slow cooker.
- Add the rest of your ingredients and cook the chili on high for 3-4 hours or on low for 6-7 hours.
Storing & freezing tips
- In the refrigerator: this healthy turkey chili will stay good in your fridge for about 1 week. Once your chili is completely cooled, just place it in an airtight container (or multiple, if you’d like to meal prep it) without the additional toppings and place it in the fridge. To reheat it, simply do so in the microwave with a microwave safe bowl, or feel free to reheat it on the stovetop. Add your toppings once you’re ready to serve!
- In the freezer: chili makes the BEST freezer-friendly meal! Follow the instructions above, but instead of placing the turkey chili in the refrigerator just put it in your freezer for up to 3 months. To reheat, simply thaw the chili overnight and reheat on the stovetop or in the microwave when you’re ready to eat.

125 Ridiculously Good For You, Sometimes Indulgent, and Absolutely Never Boring Recipes for Every Meal of the Day
Ingredients
- 2 teaspoons olive oil
- 1 yellow onion, chopped
- 3 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 medium red bell pepper, chopped
- 1 pound extra lean ground turkey or chicken (99%)
- 4 tablespoons chili powder* (I used McCormick chili powder, which is very mild. Do not use spicy chili powder, and if using a different brand, start with 2 tablespoons)
- 2 teaspoons ground cumin
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon salt, plus more to taste
- 1 (28-ounce) can diced tomatoes or crushed tomatoes
- 1 1/4 cups chicken broth
- 2 (15 oz) cans dark red kidney beans, rinsed and drained
- 1 (15 oz) can sweet corn, rinsed and drained
- For topping: cheese, avocado, tortilla chips, cilantro, sour cream
Instructions
- Place oil in a large pot and place over medium high heat. Add in onion, garlic and red pepper and saute for 5-7 minutes, stirring frequently.
- Add in ground turkey and break up the meat; cooking until no longer pink. Next add in chili powder, cumin, oregano, cayenne pepper and salt; stir for about 20 seconds.
- Next add in tomatoes, chicken broth, kidney beans and corn. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 30-45 minutes or until chili thickens and flavors come together. Taste and adjust seasonings and salt as necessary.
- Garnish with anything you'd like. Makes 6 servings, about 1 1/2 cups each.

Absolutely. You can put everything in the crockpot and cook for 7 hours on low or 3 hours on high, then break up the meat!

Hi Paul! I would recommend browning the meat a bit beforehand (to break it up, as ground turkey comes in that large block). And then add it to your crockpot!

Just let the chili cool completely and freeze it in a freezer-safe container. Then thaw it in the refrigerator and either heat in the microwave or on the stovetop!
Can we put frozen turkey in crockpot or defrost first?
I wouldn’t recommend it! I would defrost it and then brown it before adding to your crockpot.

I made this recipe last week and it was absolutely divine!! The chili wasn’t even mildly spicy really and i used all 4 tablespoons of chili! I am making this again tonight and i will throw in a jalapeño pepper!

Hi! I made this in the instant pot- I used the sauté function to brown the meat and cook the onions, garlic and pepper, then added the remaining ingredients and placed on manual- high pressure for 10 minutes. It was divine.

Look at how much saturated fat is in the meat that you buy and divide it by how many servings the chili makes at your house, The other ingredients in this recipe (toppings not included) don’t contain sat fat so it’s going to be based on the % lean meat you choose.

I’m typically a beef over turkey person (or i should say, my husband is ;)) but in this recipe I like turkey, and so does he. SUCH a great recipe, it’s been my go-to for a couple years now. I swap out one cane of kidney beans for a can of black beans to add a bit of a southwest feel.

Have you ever tried Kosher Ground beef? Its very good and has a different taste then non Kosher meat. Trader joes has a kosher section in there meat area.. most grocerry stores carry something kosher, just have to look harder for it.

Same here. I am a little bit frustrated that you didn’t qualify that it should be a mild chilli powder in the ingredient list. The recipe is inedible because it is so spicy. You should list an important note like this before the bottom of the page.
Hi Jessica! I do mention in the notes section at the bottom of the recipe that I use McCormick chili powder (which is very mild) and to start with 2-3 tablespoons if you’re using something else.

Substitute the corn for a can of chickpea, much healthier and nutritious. Add 1 tsp. cinnamon and nutmeg, your tastebuds will be amazed.

Is the can of diced tomatoes supposed to be drained? This chilli is really delicious but mine came out quite soupy. I had to add cornstarch to thicken it up. I will definitely make this recipe again!
That’s odd. I’ve made this 3-4 times and it’s always very thick for me! No draining of the tomatoes required.
I’m having the same challenge. After simmering with the lid on for 45 minutes I took out 1/2 cup of liquid and there’s still more. Should I be using crushed tomatoes instead of diced?
No lid on. You want to simmer your chili uncovered to allow it to simmer down a bit. Mine came out perfect and was delicious. I added 1/2 a finely diced seeded jalapeno w/ the veggies and accidentally drained one of the cans of tomatoes before realizing I wasn’t supposed to, so I added a whole can of Rotel Hot tomatoes and it was delicious. Beware – I like my food spicy so don’t follow my lead with the Hot Rotel tomatoes unless you do, too. LOL
I followed to a t and mine was watery as well.
Same. I did it in crockpock and followed directions to reduce amount of broth and it came out perfect.
Did you drain the corn and beans? If not it would cause it to be soupy.

The beans and corn are supposed to be drained, not the tomatoes.
If you leave it covered while it simmers, it will not absorb as much liquid as keeping the lid off will.

It should, especially if you have one of those food savers. I’ve had leftovers and this is the third day in the fridge, so far so good. It still tastes as fresh and delicious as day one.
Currently making this, but after scrolling through the comments I realized the beans and corn were supposed to be drained. You should include that when listing the ingredients or in the instructions.

Well it depends on if you use extra lean turkey or just regular lean turkey. Feel free to calculate the nutrition using MyFitnessPal or something similar. Sorry, I don’t do weight watchers points!
Angie, good question. It’s not easy to calculate this, it depends on what exact meat do you use, as Monique said. I calculated this recipe (with no topping) on our Recipe Analyzer and here are estimated values per serving (1/6 of recipe):
326 kcal
Protein: 29.14 g
Fat: 5.74 g
Carbohydrates: 45.26 g
Total saturated: 1.006 g
Total trans: 0.014 g
Cholesterol: 43 mg
I assumed ground turkey free fat. As you can see, this values are not exactly te the same as provided on this post, it depends what ingredients do you use.

I made this in the crockpot last week and it was delicious! My crockpot must be small because I couldn’t fit the second can of beans in. Regardless, I will definitely make this again!
Regarding those cravings…. My dissappeared when I stopped all types of sugarsand substitutes incl the ok ones… Along with no grains of any kind … Suprised me… By day 4 the fog and aches lifted… I fee free…
Although this doesn’t pertain to this chili recipe, which I’m very much looking forward to making, I appreciate your inspirational comments about feeling better after a few days of getting off of the sugar cycle. I have a real sweet tooth…and a serious problem with joint inflammation…so this is encouraging to know that if I can make myself stick it out for long enough, I’ll stop having the sugar cravings, feel better, and even lose some weight. I stopped using salt nearly 2 years ago and don’t even think about it any more….I guess your palate adjusts once it gets used to not having it, so I’m hoping it will do the same to my palate and brain by getting off the sugar express. This is a good recipe for turkey chili. I changed few things as I always do. I used Rotel tomatoes with green chilis, low salt. I added a chopped seeded Jalepeno. I used beef broth instead of chicken. Frozen corn. I also added a cup.of black rice.
Just a side note: It wax already a d3 Lucio us recipe.

Made this and the flavor was amazing but it was WAY too spicy! I feel like I eat most anything, so I’m feeling kind of weird that this felt so spicy to me. 🙂 None of my kids could eat it so my husband and I are left with the huge batch. I’m pretty sure cayenne pepper is spicier than chili powder, so I’ll probably leave that out, and maybe take the chili powder down to 3 TBSP instead of 4. I also split the chili powder-half regular and half chipotle chili powder. I also made the pumpkin cornbread muffins and they helped soften the spice if I ate a bite of the muffin with a bite of the chili.

So strange! Can I ask what kind of chili powder you use? I use McCormick and mine is perfect and definitely not too spicy to eat (I’ve made this recipe about 10x now!).
The same thing happened to me and I only used 3 Tablespoons of Red Chili instead of 4 TBS and it was way too much. I use red chili powder from the Indian grocery stores. I think even 1, maybe 2 would be the right amount, and at least a good start, and then people can adjust as they see fit. When it’s too spicy, it prevents people from eating it.
The chili powder you buy in Indian groceries is WAY hotter than the stuff labeled “chili powder” everywhere else. If you read most American “chili powder” labels, they often include other ingredients. The one in my cabinet says: chili pepper, salt, cumin, oregano, garlic. The ingredient label on the package from the Indian store says: chili pepper.
I had the same experience. I usually enjoy spicy food but with this I couldn’t even finish a serving without it hurting my whole mouth. I’m not using spices from an Indian grocery store, but I agree 4 TBS was way too much. Since the spice was so mild in the original recipe, it should be adjusted that way. If anything the recipe should say 2 TBS and then people can add more to taste.
Oh well, thanks for the recipe, but considering changing the actual recipe instead of leaving a paragraph at the bottom saying your using a less spicy chili powder,its easy to overlook and not an easy fix once you add too much.
Chipotle chili powder is VERY spicy, no wonder you couldn’t eat it!
This was pretty easy to make and ridiculously delicious! I didn’t have oregano so I used Italian seasoning and also used crushed red pepper instead of cayenne. I will definitely be making this again — beats the previous recipe I used to use with packets of taco and ranch seasoning!!! Much healthier and I know everything going into it 🙂

This was some of the best darn chili I’ve ever had! Only changes I made were minor. I put in about 5 cloves of minced garlic and used two different brands of beans. One from Goya had some kind of red sauce I couldnt get off but it tasted great! I also added a few tablespoons of brown sugar at the end to kill the heat for my wife. She NEVER eats chili. As I write this she is on her 4th bowl! Fantastic recipe!

I made this recipe tonight. Made a few tweaks to adjust to I ingredients I had on hand.
2 1/2 T chili powder in lieu of 4T
1T Trader Joes 21 Seasoning Salute
(Was out of Oregano so used this as a substitute and since it also has cumin in it I only used 1 t of actual cumin)
Chicken broth…only used 1 cup in lieu of 1 1/4 cup
Diced Tomatoes–used 1-15oz can in lieu of what recipe calls for.
Substituted one can of pinto beans for 2nd can kidney beans
Orange & yellow peppers rather than red
Turned out fabulous. I think I added a tad extra sea salt and some extra cayenne pepper but it really wasn’t overly spicy. Thanks for the great recipe!

This turned out awesome. I used crushed tomatoes instead of diced and added 1 chopped jalapeno w/seeds removed for a hint of heat. Other than that, followed the recipe to the T and it was perfect.

You’ll need a very large crockpot, but I think you can throw it all in. I would reduce the broth to 1 cup (so 2 cups if you are doubling). You may also want to brown the meat first.
I would like to try this in a crockpot, as well. Do I need to cook anything prior to just chucking it in?
You could brown the meat beforehand if you’d like.

This was absolutely fantastic! My husband who doesn’t do spicy ate it twice, and I even added a jalapeno! I also took some to work and gave some to a Hispanic coworker, and he raved about how good it was. I did use the 93 lean turkey. I’m too afraid that the 99 will be too dry. Very good! I cooked it in the crockpot, but first did all of step 1 as listed above. I then added the cooked and seasoned meat, onion, and pepper, to the crockpot wit all the other ingredients. Cooked on low for 7 hours and then took off the top and simmered for an hour to thicken it. Also added a splash of balsamic vinegar. Was very good!!

This was great I cut the chili powder a bit for my kids and realized I only had one can of beans so I threw in a large chopped up sweet potato it was great!
This chili was very tasty but way to spicy. I love spice but thought 4 tablespoons of chili powder was too much. I cut back to 2 and it was still too spicy. I will make again but maybe with 1 tablespoon and adjust at the end.
Just posted thT I also found it too spicy. I used an Indian chili. Maybe that was the issue. Will try again as I love the base flavour.
Yes, indian chilis are extremely hot. I would not recommend using them in this recipe.

When cold weather hits, one of my go to meals is chili. Just have to be be careful with the chicken broth if you are claiming this is gluten free. Not all chicken broth is so check labels if you have celiac

I am not huge kidney bean fan so I only used one can and found it was the perfect amount for us. I was so hungry and anxious to eat that I even forgot to use the toppings!! I made it this morning too and have enough to last me for the next few days. I tried it for lunch and it was so good. I’m not a hot chili person but I like spices in my food. I thought it was just perfect. I just stored it away and a tiny bit and tastes the spices. Although I didn’t have cayenne pepper I put black pepper lol
I will be making it again. Directions were on point and honestly I don’t like the crock pot I put it in for the 45 minutes. Ok enough said

I have just made this Chilli and feel very annoyed. I chose this recipe because of the 5 star rating. I fell sure the recipe has a mistake. 4 tablespoons of chilli powder is ridiculous. Just had to throw it all in the bin. Waste of money and my time.

It was sooo spicy, but if I add it to sweet potato or something like that, it is bearable. I used Indian chili powder so that’s probably why 4 tblsp was incredibly spicy. also, I am Mexican and love anything spicy so it is kind of strange that something is almost too spicy. Otherwise, delicious!
This was delicious! At first, I thought wow, that’s a lot of hot, and I love hot, so I was cautious as I added the heat. I ended up using the same amount and it’s great. Recommend those that are sensitive to heat to try this technique. Thanks for the Recipe.

I made this chili tonight and it was fabulous! I have to admit I tweaked it a little. I did half ground sausage and half turkey because I needed wanted to give it a little kick with the meat (yeah…it is a little fattier) and my sob curls up his lips when turkey is mentioned. The chili powder was half regular chili powder and half Hot Mexican chili powder. Gives it a nice spiciness. Great recipe!
I just made this for maybe the third time since I found the recipe on Pinterest. It really is the best chili. I think it’s the chicken broth that kicks it up a notch. It’s so much more flavorful than chili I usually make. Love it!
I made this chilli once before and loved it and I tried again tonight, and while it tastes yummy, the broth is very liquid. I made it in the same way but all I can think of that was different is the first time I took it over to a friend’s house after making it and reheated it there. Should I let this cool and see if it thickens after that? Or is there something else I should do to thicken it now? Thank you!!

The nutrition info for the turkey chili is without the toppings. If your broth is liquid like you could add in a tablespoon or two of tomato paste, or just simmer longer. It also should thicken up the next day. If you want to make it again, just reduce the broth by 1/2 cup. 🙂
This chili is delicious!! I reduced the serving size and was able to squeeze two weeks out of it to store in the freezer.
We enjoyed this even on a hot day here in Central Pennsylvania! YUMMERS! My kids and husband don’t like kidney beans, so I put a can of black beans in place of one of the kidney beans (I like the kidney beans so kept one can!) I also doubled the tomatoes and seasons and added another pound of meat. Excellent! Thanks for sharing!

I love this recipe!! Made it for the first time last week. We’re huge spicy food fans but I dislike bell peppers, so I just subbed the bell pepper for 4 seeded jalapeños. Oh and I used some grilled corn I had in the freezer instead of the canned corn, and it still turned out delicious. On my way to the grocery store now to pick up ingredients for a 2nd batch!

I made this tonight and it was delicious, definitely not too spicy, though my family loves spice! Down to my two-year old we all loved this! I added two jalapeños and some chopped carrots and used fresh corn, also one can of kidney beans and one of black beans to add color and more texture, came out great!

So I am currently making this right now for the first time and was really excited about it, but it’s soupy. Simmering didn’t thicken it at all. I had to increase the heat to get rid of the “water”. I followed the recipe exactly so I’m not sure what happened 🙁
This was FANTASTIC! So much better than store bought mixes. I was a bit skeptical using ground turkey breast but WOW! So much favor and so much healthier than the fatty versions. I can’t wait to make this again.
This is in the crock now. Browned the garlic and onions on the stove stop first with olive oil. Put in the turkey, browned that. Threw in the crock, with the tomatoes, corn and beans. (I hate beans so I did one can!) my local store had no red peppers anywhere so that’s the only thing I left out. Measured spices & everything else to the T and this came out SO DELICIOUS. I also wanna add I like soupy chili so I did keep the original recipe for the chicken broth.( I noticed your side note just before commenting lol so it’s ok that I kept your recipe exact aside from the beans & red bell) My mom does “box flavor” for chili and she would just die over this. Thank you!!
This didn’t last long, it was delicious and they all wanted seconds! I ran out of chilli powder (oops) and so it only had 1TBSP rather than 3, but was actually perfect like that so I’ll probably do the same next time. There will most certainly be a next time!!
Great flavors!! I also substituted garbanzo beans for the corn and used a heaping teaspoon of Emeril’s southwest seasoning mix. I drained the liquid after I sautéed the vegetables and turkey. Will definitely make this again.

Excellent chili and not too hot. In fact, I used diced tomatoes with chilis for more kick. I also substituted northern beans for kidney beans because we like white beans better than kidney. It’s still delicious.

I was looking for a good recipe for left over turkey from Thanksgiving! This fit the bill perfectly. I let the chili simmer a bit before I put the cooked turkey in there. It turned out amazing! Thank you. I have not been able to master Turkey Soup, so this is now my ‘go to’ with left over turkey. I have an extra batch of leftovers I am saving for another day. Thanks for the great recipe! For us it was about one ladle-ful. I should have measured it but instead I ladled into our bowls and then into tupperware for the rest. So maybe more like a cup and a half? Maybe 2? It was so good we might have more than one serving, haha!
My husband hates beans, but I convinced him to give this a try. I tried to swing it my way, saying that red kidney beans are a “meatier bean” and that he would be ok. He said ok. Smelled amazing! We did it in the crockpot and couldn’t wait the 3hrs, so we added some flour to thicken it and served it up. Decided to use tortilla chips to dip, and I put sour cream/cheese/avocado on mine. Heaven!! We both LOVED it!! The chips added extra salt so we didnt need more than the 1/4tsp the recipe called for. We are only sad that 1 serving was so little haha. Great turkey chili recipe! I made it last night and my husband & I both loved it. I used 1 can of red kidney beans and 1 can of black beans just to mix things up a little. I think chickpeas would also be delicious in it, and I might try adding a green pepper as well. I also added a little extra chicken broth (probably 2 cups total) because it didn’t seem like there would be quite enough liquid to simmer for 1/2 hour; and I used 1/2 tsp cayenne instead of 1/4 which was the perfect amount of spicy for us. So happy I get to bring this for lunch today!

I made this and it was fantastic! I wish I didn’t leave out the extra chili powder! I added jalapenos to my serving, as well as some plain greek yogurt instead of sour cream. I wouldn’t use a crock pot, only because this took me about an hour to make from start to finish. I’ll definitely be taking a look at more AK’s recipes!
We love the recipe just as is but my daughter makes a vat of it and adds white, red and black beans in it for color. McCormicks apple dry rub is a nice touch also….adds a little smoke flavor. She freezes it and takes it off to college.

I have made this for my diet. I use a whole bag of chopped broccoli instead of corn. I used 6oz tomato paste + 22oz water instead of canned tomatoes. Sometimes I add a cup of cooked quinoa for a thicker chili. I have made this at least 6Xs and I take it to work for my lunch. It’s such a great recipe and so easy to make.

Rave reviews from our friends at our football playoff game get-together!!! I cooked the chili Saturday night in a sauté pan, uncovered, which made it nice and thick. After reading the reviews, I used 3 tbsp. of chili powder instead of 4. It wasn’t spicy enough for me, but I put out sliced jalapeños with the other toppings. On Sunday I reheated it in a crock pot.The women were happy it was made with ground ‘turkey’ instead of beef.

Nice recipe! Omitted the corn (just not a fan). Turned out a bit too watery for my taste so I added a tin of tomato paste which did the job. I also cut the chili powder down to 2 tbsp. – any thing more would’ve been too spicy for my family. This will be a go to chili recipe!

Only used a half teaspoon of chilli powder as I’m in the UK and our chilli powder is very different to US stuff. Before I knew that I almost killed my husband with a 2 tbsp recipe – 4 would definitely finish him off! (I now have a cunning plan should I ever need his life insurance money…) 😉
This IS the best chili ever!!! I have made this a few times now and we LOVE it!! We use Mc Cormicks “Mexican” spicy chili and it’s PERFECT! Every time I make this everyone loves it! I love that it’s lean turkey lots of veggies and protein, so as long as I go easy on the cheesy/sour cream topping haha it’s pretty healthy and filling!

Cook it on high for 2-3 hours or low for 6-7!
For those experiencing “soupy” chili, I think it depends on the type of chili powder you use. I used a basic bottled chili ‘powder’ as opposed to the stuff that is in those little packets like McCormick’s Mild chili ‘packet.’ Mine ended up soupy, and required a little bit of corn starch to thicken. The packets have wheat flour in them, and actual chili powder does not so I believe this is where my mistake was made.

This is a fantastic recipe! I’m a meat eater but always looking for different ideas and I actually prefer this recipe over my usual beef/pork recipe! I like to cook my chilis a bit longer… really get those flavors together so I had to add an extra cup of broth. It was not soupy at all. Even after the first 45 min. I used 2.5 tbsp of regular chili powder. It was perfect, I can’t wait to make this again. Everyone loved it. Thank you!!

I made a huge pot of the chili tonight, so I quadrupled the recipe! I was nervous but it came out delicious.
I added butternut squash, mushrooms and some kale just because we had it at home and it goes great.
Used 5 table spoons of chili powder and it has the perfect little kick to it. any more would have been too much

When you say you use the McCormick chili powder, are you referring to the seasoning packet?
I have the McCormick brand in a little shaker / jar version, but they might have a seasoning packet as well!

Hi Sam! I take the entire recipe and divide it into 6 even portions. For this recipe each serving is around one heaping cup!

The flavors didn’t really blend for me after about 40 minutes of simmering, but I put half of it through the food processor, and that really helped the taste and consistency for me! I’m going to have it over noodles 🙂 Thank you!

This is my go to Chili recipe! Awesome Awesome. My whole family loves it. My young nieces are even making it on their own. My son uses it as a dip for tortilla chips or on nachos. Never lasts long in my house.

Wow this recipe was so flavourful. I didn’t have pepper so I added some mushrooms I had on hand and it worked out well. I felt the 4 tbsp of chili powder sounded a bit much so I added 1 tbsp instead and it was the perfect amount of heat for us. This recipe is now my go to for chili 🙂

Thank you for sharing this. It’s delicious. I added another pound of turkey. With that, added another 1 and 1/4 cup of broth and added more cumin, salt and oregano (about 1/2 more of what the recipe call for). Delicious!!!

Hi there, there’s so many comments that I didn’t check to see if someone already asked this. Buuuuut, if I wanted to make this without Chicken broth would there be a huge difference? Or should I just use it anyways? I was also going to use 3lbs of ground turkey and only double the rest of the ingredients but I wanted to know first if that would be too much meat compared to everything else? If it is I’ll just triple the recipe. I plan on making this tomorrow night. (We have a family of four and they are big eaters, plus we freeze leftovers). Thank you!
Hi Mikayla! I would recommend keeping the chicken broth in OR just using water! I think doubling the ingredients + extra ground turkey should be fine, but feel free to add more of the veggies, etc. if it’s looking like there aren’t enough in there!

This is the perfect dinner for snow! You should be able to add black beans and keep the recipe as-is 🙂 if it’s getting too thick feel free to add a bit of water or extra broth! Or, feel free to sub black beans for the kidney beans.

This was so delicious!!! Made it tonight for dinner 😋 It was a last minute idea so I had to substitute the kidney beans with chickpeas (used 1 can) and I didn’t have chicken broth but it still came out amazing! In place of the chicken broth I used water and just upped the spices. I added frozen peaches and cream corn and sautéed celery with the onion and red peppers. I topped it with Cheddar cheese, avocado, a little cream cheese (didn’t have sour cream) and cilantro. My husband loves it too! Definitely making this again!

This was delicious! Best chili recipe I’ve ever made! I only used 2 tablespoons chili powder. It was perfect. Added jalapeños, sour cream and cheese for toppings. Will definitely make again. I’m throwing out my other recipe. Even my husband approved who typically only like steak, burgers and pizza.

I am not a fan of turkey by any means but I am on a healthy kick and sick of chicken so I figured ground turkey chili would be flavorful enough for me to withstand it being turkey and OH MY did this recipe NOT dissappoint!!! It’s always interesting to read comments about degrees of heat. I made a double batch of this recipe as written but threw in a few extra veggies that I had on hand (carrots, celery, zucchini—the last added just before simmering) + dried chipotles, red chilis, and fresh jalapeño. For me it had a nice flavour and was not overly spicy. I grew up in Minn. but lived for a few years in Texas which may have slightly dulled my sensitivity to pepper! Thanks for a great recipe—I am now a follower!

Hello! I first came across this recipie about 3 years ago. I fell completely in love with it as I was trying to create a healthier eating lifestyle. We always enjoyed red meats a little too much so I wasn’t sure what to expect. I can’t even tell the difference. My picky father refuses to eat turkey and he didn’t even know that’s what I fed him. So with that being said I make this chili often and I triple the batch. We either share it with parents or I just freeze some for a different day and we eat the rest throughout the week. I also have a habit of having all the ingredients including the broth and canned goods on hand so if the mood strikes me I just throw it all together and don’t even have to do any shopping for it. I think that means I really like it. Now that we are getting back on track once again with healthier eating, I will definitely check out your other recipes. Thanks so much!

I just made this recipe and it was amazing – I made a few alterations. i *try* to eat low carb so i only added one can of kidney beans (idek if this helps with less carbs but i’d assume so. w/e) and i replaced those missing beans with an extra green pepper in addition to the red pepper and extra half pound of ground turkey. i only eyeballed the measurements ( i was cooking at my dad’s and he doesn’t have a teaspoon or tablespoon) and this recipe was SO AMAZING WTF…… YOU DON’T NEED A SLOW COOKER TO MAKE DELICIOUS CHILI OKAY….. YOU DON’T NEED LIKE 7 HOURS EITHER. THIS SHIT IS DELICIOUS. PREP TOOK 15 MINS AND I COOKED IT FOR 30 AND BOOM. THERE YOU GO. 5 STAR CHILI IN UNDER AN HOUR. SCREW THE WHOLE DAY THING!!!! THIS IS GREAT

Awesome!! Very tasty and just enough spice! I did reduce the amount of chili powder because we love Cholula in our chili but we didn’t need it. I cooked a chicken breast in the bouillon water first then cut it up into the onion and peppers. I also would use diced tomatoes next time as it did seem a bit more tomato-y with the crushed. Very good though and will be making this again!

This chili is fantastic! I live in England and can’t get American chili powder here. I didn’t realize that chili powder was a blend of spices until I nearly made smoke coming out of my ears making chili with the UK version of chili powder. I make my own blend from a Genius Kitchen recipe but reduce the cayenne a fair bit for the kids.
Chili powder can definitely vary, but thankfully it’s easy to cut back on in here. Making your own blend in a great idea!
I made this chili today – doubled the recipe and not sure what happened with the spices but it was turning very bitter. I wound up adding some brown sugar to counter the bitterness and some lime juice to brighten it up.

Only thing is, I found the turkey to be a touch dry? May mix an egg in next time. But definitely enjoyed making it – super easy recipe!
Just makes sure to read the notes regarding the chicken broth if you decide to do it as a slow-cooker recipe

I have a little note in the “Notes” sections of the recipe – I use McCormick chili powder, which is very mild. If you’re using another brand I’d start with 2-3 T instead.

Just made this using beef and beef bone broth, frozen corn and just one can of black beans. I was short on chili powder so added more cumin. Super easy and really tasty! If it wasn’t so late I would’ve made the pumpkin corn muffins – soon soon…

I made this recipe tonight for the first time and OMG, I couldn’t believe how tasty it was and so easy to prepare. Thank-you, Monique for sharing it! I’ve been sitting here though trying to figure out what’s what. I thought it tasty a bit too salty, but now I’m wondering if what I tasted was not salt at all but maybe one of the spices. I’d like to figure that out so I can adjust next time. I am the only one in my house who eats chili so I have two big containers for lunches for the entire week. Also wondering if I could freeze one or if it won’t be the same when thawed and reheated. This will be my go to recipe from now on!

This is by far my favorite chili recipe. I have made it numerous times and passed it out to family and friends and they can’t get enough of it. I tweak the recipe a little and do one can of kidney beans and one can of black beans . Tonight I’m gonna do it with shredded chicken instead of ground d turkey breast. I’ve made this recipe twice now, as written. It was absolutely delicious! I usually use ground beef, however, this chili is so flavourful I don’t even notice the difference. The best part is that one generous serving is one smart point on the Weight Watchers program.

I tried this recipe exactly as presented and it tasted “off” until I added in several tablespoons of honey. I am surprised that not many commented on thr need for some sugar/honey in this recipe. After the honey, it was amazing!

I made this a couple weeks ago and it was so good. The only problem was it seemed a little dry so I added extra chicken broth which helped. The next day the leftovers were extremely dry. I don’t know why. Might have to add even more chicken broth next time, but I don’t want to be like a soup.
Interesting — perhaps you simmered it on too high of heat. Definitely feel free to add more broth if necessary — it won’t hurt. I suggest 1/4 cup at a time.

Really a great recipe, the only thing I changed was I swapped the Cumin for Paprika (cuz I was out of cumin), I added soy sauce to add some umami to the dish, and I increased the amount of turkey to 1.5 lbs for a meatier dish

I can’t wait To make this for my family, I’m a horrible cook so I’m trying to get good at the crock pot! This looks amazing! If I’m using frozen corn and dry beans instead of canned, what adjustments do I need to make? I read bringing the beans to a boil and draining would make them crock pot ready? Maybe just thaw the corn?

Hi! I would cook beans separately before adding them to the pot. soak beans for 6 hours, then simmer beans for 1 hour or until tender. Hope you love this one and that you find more here that you love, too! 🙂
This recipe is way too spicy and I agree with many of the other comments, leaving a note at the bottom after the ads is not good enough. Change the actual recipe to tell people that you used mild chilli instead because it’s not a given. This recipe is inedible with that amount of spice
I used a generic chili powder and have tried several versions without issue. Most chili powders at grocery stores aren’t spicy, but it also depends on how you handle spice. I can certainly update the recipe to indicate the brand I used and add a note about spice.

I am disappointed, my chili was very watery and wasn’t chili colored at all. It looked sort of like plain turkey meat with kidney beans in water. I might have done something wrong but I followed the recipe closely.

I just have say what a favorite this is of mine. It’s what lead me to your amazing blog.I do a combo of black beans and kidney beans, corn, and I had a leftover sweet potato that I threw in this time YUM!!!!! my boyfriend and I LOVE this dish. I pair it with a low fat cornbread recipe that I have. I even love it cold! If you can get your hands on some candied jalapeños as a topper you will lose your mind 🙂 We had some from a recent trip to Colorado. LOVE your blog so much!

This is my go-to chili recipe. I leave it in my Crockpot for at least 6 hours and it always comes out great!! The only thing I do differently is add a little cornstarch slurry in at the end to thicken it up.
My mom passed away and her chili was my absolute favorite! For most of my adult life I have tried to find a good recipe that gives me that same satisfaction. I am making this recipe today in the crockpot and my house smells amazing! I snuck a little bit too just to see and it tastes as good as it smells! Although it is not anything like my moms this will definitely go into the recipe book to do again! It’s delicious!

My family loves this recipe! I only use 2TBS of chili powder and 1 can of beans (my kids aren’t bean fans). I make a double batch when we have company, it’s easy to heat up and very filling. Everyone always asks for the recipe. I’ve also frozen it and it defrosts great. Thank you!

I made this and it was great. I used regular chili powder and only used 2 TB. I added more broth because I like my chili more brothy. I topped with avocado and served with a side of tortilla chips. Great recipe! I’ve loved all your recipes so far!

We love the healthy turkey chili recipe! My diet has to be low sodium so it is challenging to find recipes that my entire family likes and this is a HUGE hit with everyone. The spice is perfect for me and I do not tolerate much spice. Happy the weather is cooling down so we are having this for dinner tonight!

Make sure you use crushed tomatoes and do not cover the pot at all, as this will create condensation. If can also reduce the broth to 1/2 cup total if you want a super thick chili.

Used 93% lean turkey instead
Green pepper instead of red
Added a 15oz can of tomato sauce
Added Some tomato paste
Added a chicken boullion cube
I topped it with cheddar cheese, sour cream, jalapeño, cilantro, tortilla chips and raw onion.
Everyone agreed it was the best chili they’ve ever had.

This recipe is amazing! It is easy to make and the thickness comes out perfectly. The flavor is also amazing with just the right amount of spice. It has also been really easy to tweek this recipe when I needed to. I have made it vegetarian in the past by substituting the ground turkey with an extra can (or two) of beans and I have also tried a version with cut up carrots, and celery which worked out great.

I absolutely loved this chili! I made it sans corn as a preference and added some chipotle powder to give it a little heat. I also used some garlic salt in place of regular salt to kick up the garlic flavor a tad more. Mine only took about 20 minutes of simmering for the ingredients to come together. I served this with some steamed broccoli and crackers. I can’t wait to eat it again for lunch tomorrow!

Made this chili on my daughters first birthday when we had a “Fall Festival.” It’s become a staple. I’ve made it every Halloween for three years, and make it a few times a month in the winter. It is delicious, filling, and a crowd pleaser. We love to put whole Greek yogurt on it in lieu of sour cream.

I have made this recipe many times and can honestly say that it is absolutely the best recipe that I have found for turkey chili. I usually, but not always, make it lower carb by omitting the beans and corn and adding in extra bell peppers – all colors! My “go to” for sure!!

My son left out the cayenne pepper. He added to the recipe one can of black beens. The chili was awesome with so much flavor and all the spice you can handle. Never missed the cayenne pepper.

This dish was very good. and not difficult to prepare. I made it earlier today for my son & I. It was the perfect dish for a cold, rainy wintry night and it achieved the coveted “make it again” rating. That, I will do.
Note: Another user mentioned that 4 TBSP chili powder might be a bit on the high side so I only used 3 TBSP (Great Value brand) and the spiciness was just right.

I’m obsessed with this chili! I make it often when it gets cold out. I sometimes swap the ground turkey for ground tofu crumbles, and that is also wonderful. My recent discovery is that the absolute BEST topping for this chili is homemade pickled jalapeños! It takes like 10 minutes while the chili is cooking, you just bring vinegar, water, salt, garlic, and a little bit of sugar to a boil and then just toss in some sliced jalapeños and let them soak it up! They are transformative on this dish, a perfect burst of a sweet and spicy kick!

I noticed two things in the nutrition count and would like to know how I can reduce the carb count? Also, I see that there is no sodium count, which is extremely important if you are following a healthier lifestyle as we all know what sodium does to us!!!!!! Can you say BLOATED fast enough. Made this on a snowy weeknight for my boyfriend and I. We wanted something hearty and cozy and I wanted something that wouldn’t take too much effort to cook or clean up. As easy as chopping it all up and throwing it in a big pot and you have a delicious meal with plenty for leftovers!! So tasty and filling we both loved it!!

I added a hearty pinch of cayenne and felt it was enough. I actually ran out of chili powder and only had enough for 3 T. but it was plenty and my family really enjoyed your recipe!

We love this recipe now and I do it almost once a week. I do change a bit the spices. I put one teaspoon of chili flakes instead of the chilli powder and don’t put cayenne pepper just a bit of normal black pepper. I add just one teaspoon of cumin and the suggested oregano amount. It’s delicious this way for us.

I made this turkey chili recipe tonight and everyone loved it. The flavors and seasonings were perfect. The recipe is easy to make and the cooking was completed within 60 minutes. The only modifications I made was I added a green bell pepper, 1/2 lb extra of ground dark meat chicken, and substituted beef broth for the chicken broth. I served it up with homemade corn bread; the dinner was delicious!

So happy you like it! I’ve never actually cooked with an Instant Pot so I’m not 100% sure what the instructions would be.
This was a great recipe. I made a few changes to make it a more traditional chili. I used 93% lean ground turkey. From experience the 99% just doesn’t have enough flavor. I used slightly more onions as I like them in chili. Green pepper instead of red – what I had on hand. I used only 1 cup chicken broth but also added 12 oz beer as I always add beer to chili. Lastly I deleted the corn – while I love corn it’s not traditional in chili and I prefer it as a side. That’s all and it turned out great. I feel this recipe would easily accommodate any minor changes you may wish to make. I did not find it overly spicy at all – just enough. Definitely will make again. .

This was SO good. It was too cold in Michigan to go out, so I grabbed the following substitutes from the pantry. Navy beans instead of kidney, taco seasoning instead of chili powder, bottle of Modelo instead of chicken stock, white pepper instead of cayenne. The taste and texture were great.

I have made this recipe time and time again!! Making it now actually haha. We use venison because we are a family of hunters but I have made it with turkey too and it’s wonderful! We go light on the chili powder but live on this recipe in the winter with ALL the fixings ♥️

I’ve made this twice and it’s been a hit with the family every time! I used a little less chili powder the second time around because it was a bit too spicy but I did add a tad bit of unsweetened coconut milk to bring it down. I know it sounds odd but you can’t even taste it! I also added a little bit more chicken broth and it came out perfect!! One of my favorite recipes ever.
